A visionary entrepreneur, passionate about finance, cars, sailing, wine as well as actively engaged in countless philanthropic activities including the hospital of the Adolphe de Rothschild Foundation. This, according to his closest associates, is the portrait of Benjamin de Rothschild – the banker who had run the group founded by his father since 1953 who was struck down last Friday by a heart attack at the age of 57.
The sudden death of the Rothschild heir banker
A sudden death, which occurred in Pregny, Switzerland, a country where the de Rothschild group has the center of its interests. Leave his wife, Ariane de Rothschild, and four daughters and one of the world’s first private banking group, created by their father, Baron Edmond de Rothschild , whose parents fled to Switzerland during World War II to escape persecution of Jews.
The Rothschild group, from the Napoleonic wars to the quarrels between cousins
The Edmond de Rothschild group manages assets of 160 billion euros, is headquartered in Geneva, operates in 33 countries and has around 2,700 employees. According to the estimate of Forbes, the assets of Benjamin de Rothschild were 1.5 billion euros. He was a descendant of the Rothschild family, which has a history of nearly 300 years in the management of European banks and who played a leading role (financing armies and states) during the Napoleonic wars and in financing the Italian Risorgimento.
In 2018 a dispute had come to an end that had begun three years earlier by Benjamin de Rothschild and his wife Ariane, who had accused the family of creating confusion with the use of the Rothschild brand without further qualifications: since then the Geneva branch and the French one of the dynasty had stipulated an agreement that prompted them to always use other identifying elements that would allow them to identify belonging to two different organizations – Rothschild & Co (Franco-British) and Edmond de Rothschild (Franco-Swiss).
The renunciation of business for sailing
De Rothschild had led the international finance group, specializing in asset management, private banking and private equity, which had been named after his father since 1997. In recent years, however, Benjamin de Rothschild was more focused on sponsorship activities related to sailing and to the business of the company, which his wife Ariane was actively involved in. Among the sailing activities to which the banker was most closely linked is the project of the Jules Verne Trophy, for the circumnavigation of the world under sail with the Gitana Team which fielded a high-speed trimaran hydrofoil.
