Orphaned by Marc Marquez for at least a good part of the season, Honda is looking for alternatives. But in the meantime the Japanese leaders want to shed light on what happened to their protégé, from the accident of 19 July 2020 onwards. According to the French magazine Motorcycle Review a group of experts sent by Japan will investigate the vain attempt to re-enter the race a few days after the injury and the resulting consequences. The Spaniard, absent from racing since 25 July, faced a real ordeal ended with the third operation in December to heal from a bone infection in the humerus of his right arm that prevented the formation of the callus. The rush to return racing has compromised the recovery of Marquez who was obviously ill advised and is now facing a long convalescence: at the moment the rider is following an antibiotic-based therapy that if it does not work – according to Bernard Achou, former osteopath of the Mobile Clinic of the World Championship – would even require a fourth operation. This is why Honda wants to investigate the possible responsibilities of an event that leaves it without a top rider and with minimal, if not nonexistent, chances to fight for the title (unless the new signing Pol Espargaro makes a sensational exploit).
Closed doors for Dovizioso
The opportunity to replace Marquez with Dovizioso seems to be losing altitude. The chief mechanic of the eight-time world champion, Santi Hernandez, interviewed by motorsport.com, hinted at the decision to continue with Stefan Bradl, official test driver and natural replacement for the Catalan: It would not be normal to replace Marc with Dovizioso. It makes more sense to continue with Bradl, because he did all season, he has a good feeling with the bike. And of course the test driver who is trying to improve it. The German helped to change the character of the RC213V after Marquez left the scene, who has a very personal and difficult to imitate driving. Honda will have to set the season with a different technical profile. Looking for that driveability that until now has been his limit, since only Marquez was able to squeeze the full potential of his bike. At Jerez, Wednesday 20, Bradl took to the track a version of the Japanese V4 characterized by a very different chassis. The beginning of a new course?
