VIAREGGIO (Lucca) – The 72nd edition of the Viareggio Cup, one of the most important youth football tournaments in the world, has been postponed to a later date. The announcement by the organizers – in the air for a few weeks now due to the protraction of the pandemic – arrived on Monday morning: “The persistence of the health emergency linked to the covid – reads a note from the Young Footballers Center – characterized in this period from the proclamation of Tuscany as the orange zone for the next few weeks, makes it impossible to organize the 72nd edition of the Viareggio Cup in March ». The dates initially indicated by the CGC were those of Monday 15th for the start and Monday 29th for the final. «We are evaluating – adds the president Alessandro Palagi – the opportunity to reschedule the event in June or September. It will be our responsibility to inform all the clubs about the new dates as soon as possible ».
THE STADIUM – In recent years, the event – which is obviously closely linked to the city of Viareggio, where it was born and has always had its headquarters – has found itself forced in spite of itself to go through several complicated moments, due to the conditions of the city stadium of the Pines. In 2018, while the tournament was in progress, he risked having to move after some structural problems had emerged precisely “ai Pini”. The plant then closed its doors on June 30 of that year due to a still unresolved unusability, so much so that in 2019 the tournament moved its main field to La Spezia. In 2020 the Viareggio Cup was not held due to the covid emergency, while this year it was initially scheduled for the period between 15 and 29 March. A couple of weeks ago the mayor of Viareggio Giorgio Del Ghingaro, in presenting the planning process for the restructuring of the plant – which should start in the coming months – had announced the desire to convene the conference of services to evaluate the possibility of provisionally reopen the Pini stadium already for this edition of the tournament, carrying out the necessary works for the green light, with the aim of having at least a few games played within the city facility.
