The tower of Castruccio Castracani illuminated in blue, with the number 2 in the center to make a fine show of s. the homage that the town of Ghivizzano, a hamlet of Coreglia Antelminelli in the Serchio Valley, dedicates to Giovanni Di Lorenzo, his “prodigal son” and full-back of the national football team who will take part in the European Championships starting from Friday evening. After a season as a protagonist in Naples, Di Lorenzo was summoned by the technical commissioner Roberto Mancini to be part of the blue group that tries an encore at 53 years after Italy’s only triumph in this event, dated 1968.
A dream come true – comments Marco Remaschi, mayor of Coreglia Antelminelli as well as a great football fan to the point of having for years been the manager of Ghiviborgo, a team that plays in the Serie D championship -: for Giovanni, what a special boy , but also for his family. And for all of us. There is a piece of Coreglia at the European Championships and a really great emotion. Giovanni is a true Ghivizzanese: his community awaits him with open arms and we will celebrate him as soon as the tournament is over, whatever the outcome. It will be a party for the whole Valley.
The community of Ghivizzano has always followed Di Lorenzo’s football events with great enthusiasm and affection: he arrived in Serie A with the Empoli shirt, after a brilliant championship, he arrived in Naples to debut first in the Champions League and then in the national team. On the occasion of the first convocation with the blues – in October 2019 – the parish priest of the village pays homage to that moment by ringing the bells of the church in celebration.
