Mayor Dario Nardella will return today from Istanbul, where he is also on an institutional visit as president of Eurocities, the network of large European cities. And during the two days he met the mayor of the Turkish capital Ekrem Imamoglu. Imamoglu is one of the most important political figures in the “progressive” political landscape, or in any case secular and opposition, of his country, after Erdogan’s authoritarian turn. And in these days he is also at the center of a judicial attack: as the Corriere recalls, the Turkish prosecutors have opened an investigation against him for a video in which he walks in the mausoleum of Sultan Mohammed II with his hands behind his back. A “disrespect”, the alleged crime. But many commentators have read in this choice a political attempt to curb the rise of Ekrem Imamoglu, who could be Erdogan’s main competitor in the next national elections.
“Istanbul and Florence united more than ever to help their communities and improve political, economic and cultural relations between Europe and Turkey – wrote Mayor Nardella on Facebook – In Istanbul I expressed solidarity on behalf of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu of Eurocities for the unjust attacks suffered in recent days and convinced support in the common challenges on the economy, work, civil rights, environment.
